Rhinoplasty in Salt Lake City, UT

Is Rhinoplasty Right for Me?

The nose is the true focal point of the face, and many patients realize that optimizing the appearance of their nose can subtly improve the look of the entire face. At Envision Cosmetic Surgery, we are proud to offer rhinoplasty to the men and women living in and around Salt Lake City, Utah.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, a nose surgery also referred to as a nose job, can enhance the size or shape of the nose to improve the appearance and overall facial harmony. However, it can also be used to repair functional deficits in the nose, such as those caused by birth defects or injuries.

What are the Benefits of a Nose Job?

  • Improved breathing ability/function
  • Enhanced facial harmony
  • Correction of asymmetry
  • Refined shape and size of the nose

Who is a Good Candidate for a Nose Job?

The best way to determine your candidacy for rhinoplasty is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Dunkley. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Dunkley will evaluate your cosmetic goals and help you determine whether a nose job is a good fit for you. In addition to being in good health and having realistic expectations for the treatment, you might be a good candidate for a nose job if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Dissatisfaction with the shape, size or appearance of the nose
  • Traumatic Injury that  changed the look of the nose
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose

When is the Best Age for a Nose Job?

A rhinoplasty can be performed any time after puberty, once rapid facial growth has stopped. This means that rhinoplasty can be performed on patients as early as in their mid to late teenage years. Any patient under 18 will need a parent or guardian to consent to their surgery.

What Are The Types Of Rhinoplasty?

1

1. Cosmetic Rhinoplasty vs Functional

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is performed to enhance the appearance of the nose. It can address various aesthetic concerns, including the size, shape, symmetry, and proportion of the nose. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can involve reducing or augmenting the nasal bridge, reshaping the nasal tip, narrowing or widening the nostrils, or adjusting the angle between the nose and the upper lip. This is a suitable solution for patients who are unhappy with the appearance of the nose, or who have injured or broken the nose and want to restore its original appearance.

Functional rhinoplasty aims to improve the function of or breathing through the nose. Breathing issues may be caused by a deviated septum or structural abnormalities from injury or prior surgery. This type of rhinoplasty focuses on correcting the internal structures of the nose to enhance airflow and alleviate breathing problems.

2. Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty

A closed rhinoplasty means that all the incisions are made on the inside of the nose. There are no visible scars afterwards because no incisions have been made on the outside. An open rhinoplasty includes all the incisions on the inside of the nose, like a closed procedure, but adds an incision across the columella which is the skin between the nostrils. An open rhinoplasty is more common, especially when the tip needs to be modified.

Questions For Your Consult

How Can I Prepare For a Nose Job?

After attending a consultation with Dr. Dunkley and scheduling your surgery, the best way to prepare for a nose job is to plan for your recovery period. You’ll need someone to accompany you on the day of your surgery to drive you home and assist you around the house. Additionally, you’ll need to plan for time off of work and other activities while you heal. You will be asked to quit smoking three weeks before surgery, as it can impede blood circulation and the hamper the healing process. If you have multiple medical conditions, Dr Dunkley may need an EKG and a note from your regular doctor stating you are healthy enough for surgery.

How Much Does a Nose Job Cost?

At Envision Cosmetic Surgery, each rhinoplasty procedure is personalized to a patient’s unique treatment goals. The cost of your nose job will vary depending on how we customize your treatment, which includes the techniques required to produce your desired results. Dr. Dunkley feels strongly that cosmetic surgery should be available to all and works hard to keep the cost as reasonable as possible. During your consultation, we can explain all of the costs associated with your nose job so you know exactly what to expect before starting treatment. To help make this and other treatments more affordable, we have many financing options available.

What Can I Expect On The Day Of My Nose Job?

On the day of your rhinoplasty surgery, your appointment will start with meeting the surgical team. Dr. Dunkley will speak to you and review your treatment plan with you. Once in the operating suite, you are given anesthesia and will go to sleep. This ensures you will be safe and comfortable for the duration of the surgery, with no pain or memory of the surgical process. You will awake in the recovery room and stay until the anesthesia has worn off.

What Happens During Rhinoplasty Surgery?

The nose job surgery will vary slightly depending on each individual patient’s needs. In general, however, incisions will be made, through which the cartilaginous and bony structures shaping the nose can be accessed and altered to get the desired shape. Whether you have an open or closed nasal surgery will be decided before your procedure. Small increments matter in nasal surgery and it can take multipl hours. At the end of your surgery, the nose will be taped and often a small plastic appearing cast will be placed on the nose.

Open Rhinoplasty

In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made externally across the columella, which is the strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. This incision gives Dr. Dunkley better access to the underlying nasal structures for more comprehensive reshaping, and may be ideal for correcting severe deformities or asymmetry. However, it does leave a more visible scar compared to the closed rhinoplasty technique and involves a slightly longer recovery period.

Closed Rhinoplasty

In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made internally within the nasal passages. This is Dr. Dunkley’s preferred rhinoplasty technique because it eliminates visible scarring and results in a shorter, more comfortable recovery period. The main downside of the closed rhinoplasty is that it may not be suitable for complex cases where patients want significant changes to the nasal structures.

Can I Go Home After Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Yes, rhinoplasty surgery is an outpatient procedure, so most patients are able to return home within a few hours of their surgery. However, you should arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you during the first few days of your recovery. This ensures that you have assistance and support as you begin your healing process.

How Long is Rhinoplasty Recovery?

From the day of your surgery until the day you are fully recovered, can take up to one year. However, it’s important to note that the recovery process can vary from patient to patient depending on their health, adherence to post-operative guidelines and the extent of surgery performed. Furthermore, most people return to their normal routines well before they make a full recovery.

What is the Nose Job Recovery Timeline?

Nose job recovery will vary by patient, but the week by week recovery process will generally resemble the following timeline:

Week 1

After your surgery, your nose will be splinted to support the bones and a drip pad placed underneath the nose to catch drainage. For several days following your surgery, you may feel puffiness in the face, especially around the eyes and nose. Bruising and swelling are common. To alleviate discomfort, Dr. Dunkley advises his patients to apply cold compresses to the area and to take pain relief medications as needed. The biggest complaint patients have during this time is the nose being stuffy.

Week 2-3

The swelling and bruising usually fade in 10 to 14 days. Breathing gradually improves as the swelling subsides. You may notice gradual changes in the appearance of your nose, but the final results may take several months to fully develop. The external splint placed on your nose during surgery is usually removed during this time.

First Few Months

Most of the swelling typically resolves within the first two months, but subtle changes can continue to occur over the next several months. The nose continues to refine and settle into its final shape, the tip being the last area to fully heal. It is essential to protect your nose from trauma and avoid activities that could strain or impact the healing tissues.

Months 6-12

During this stage, patients should be able to resume all of their normal activities, but some residual swelling in the nose may persist for up to a year.

Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Is There Scarring After a Nose Job?

The scarring that results from your nose job will depend on the surgical techniques used. Dr. Dunkley prefers to perform a closed rhinoplasty, which has no exterior scarring after surgery. This is because the incisions are made inside the nose. When an open rhinoplasty is performed, there is a small scar on the columella between the nostrils. However, it’s generally well-hidden and heals nicely over time.

Are the Results from Rhinoplasty Permanent?

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, is generally considered a permanent procedure. The surgical modifications made during rhinoplasty are intended to provide long-lasting results that enhance the appearance and/or function of the nose. However, it's important to note that the natural aging process and other factors can affect the nose over time. While the initial changes achieved through rhinoplasty are meant to be permanent, the nose may continue to undergo subtle changes as a person ages.
