Brow Lift Surgery
in Salt Lake City, UT
The brows often begin to droop with age, often contributing to an appearance that some describe as tired or angry. With a brow lift surgery at Envision Plastic Surgery, you can restore youthfulness to the appearance. We offer this procedure to men and women living in Salt Lake City, Utah.
What Is A Brow Lift?
A brow lift does just what it says, it raises the eyebrows. The skin of the forehead is removed or loosened and repositioned in a higher location to elevate the eyebrows. Multiple methods are available.
What Can I Expect During My Brow Lift Consultation?
Consultations with Dr. Dunkley are meant to be a two-way flow of information. First, you’ll discuss your medical history. Have you had previous surgery on your face? What medications are you taking?
You’ll discuss your desires and goals for your brow lift. What issues do you want to address? What are you unhappy/happy with about your brows?
Dr. Dunkley will then describe how the surgery is done in detail. He’ll explain how he seeks to elevate the sagging tissues and support musculature to rejuvenate your brows and entire forehead. He’ll discuss if he feels you’re a good candidate for endoscopic methods or not. If possible, he prefers to use these less invasive methods, as they create far less scarring and make for an easier recovery for you.
He’ll discuss what is involved with your recovery, and any possible risks and complications.
Throughout the process, you are encouraged to ask any questions you may have. That’s why it’s a good idea to do as much research as possible before your consultation, so you have an idea of questions and concerns. This will also be the time for you to see before and after photos of the previous brow lifts with Dr. Dunkley.
What Are The Benefits Of A Brow Lift?
No one likes to look tired, sleepy, or even angry all the time. That’s what sagging brows and drooping forehead skin can tell others. At a minimum, this isn’t how you want to be seen. At worst, it can cause serious misperceptions at work and with other people.
A brow lift with Dr. Dunkley elevates sagging brows, returning them to their former position before genetics, sun damage, and gravity had their way. These procedures remove frown lines between your eyebrows and the horizontal lines across your forehead. If your brows have sagged and become somewhat hooded, this will reverse that.
Bottom line? A brow lift will make you look more alert, refreshed, and younger. What’s not to love about that?
How Are Brow Lifts Done?
There are multiple methods for raising the brow. A direct brow makes an incision directly above the eyebrow on the forehead. The incision ends up next to the eyebrow but in a more visible location.
An endoscopic brow lift makes incisions behind the hairline and then frees the skin of the forehead to reposition it higher on the forehead. Incisions behind the hairline hide better.
Another more minor brow lift can be done through a blepharoplasty incision. Dr. Dunkley prefers incision behind the hairline for his patients in Salt Lake City. Men wanting a brow lift are challenging as when the hair is lost, even incisions once in the hair may show.
On the day of surgery, you meet with Dr. Dunkley and his surgical team. Once in the OR, an IV is started and medicines are given to relax you. Injections are placed into the incision sites and under the forehead skin to numbing the area. The forehead skin is separated from the underlying structures and moved higher. After fixing the skin in its new location, the incisions are closed. You awake fully in the recovery room.
These procedures take between one and two hours. The timeframe depends upon if Dr. Dunkley is able to use the endoscopic method or not.
Who Is A Good Candidate For A Brow Lift?
Anyone unhappy with the appearance of their eyes as a result of the brow being too low is a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Patient’s need to be in good overall health or get clearance for surgery from their regular physician.
What Can I Expect After My Brow Lift?
Recovery from a brow lift is not painful though as with any facial surgery bruising and swelling are common. As a result of gravity, often the bruising settles below the eyes. Dr. Dunkley advises his patients to keep the surgical area clean and apply ice the day of surgery. Bruising may persist for 2-3 weeks. Often the forehead is numb after surgery. Within a week normal activities are fine. The changes from a brow lift are immediately obvious and fun.
How Is A Brow Lift Different From A Facelift?
People often confuse what can be accomplished with a facelift. This is probably due to the name: they assume a “facelift” corrects aging on the entire face. The reality is that facelifts only address the area under the eyes down to the upper neck, depending on the method used.
Brow lifts target the remaining portion of the face: the forehead and brow area. These areas have a completely different underlying musculature system than the lower face, and they require completely different methods than used for facelifts. Plus, the skin on the forehead is much thinner than that of the lower face.
Are There Risks Involved With Brow Lift Surgery?
Brow lifts have been performed for decades and have been proven to be very safe and effective. This is surgery, so the usual possible complications exist excessive bleeding, reaction to anesthesia, infection, and the like.
A couple of side effects are involved with this particular surgery. Usually, these are involved with coronal brow lifts, due to the lengthy incision (another reason Dr. Dunkley prefers the endoscopic method). Patients can experience hair loss along the incision (traditional method). There can also be some difficulty moving forehead muscles or your brows, but these are rare complications. The most common side effect/complication is itching along with the incision locations. This can last for months, but eventually, it resolves when your nerves have adapted.
Is A Brow Lift Painful?
The forehead area doesn’t have the number of nerves as other areas of the face, and these aren’t very painful recoveries. The main issue most patients have is with swelling and bruising. This is due to the tissue repositioning that Dr. Dunkley did. The bruising can migrate down into your cheeks and around your eyes. While unpleasant, this should run its course in a week to 10 days.
For the first two to three days after your surgery, you’ll need to keep your head elevated, even when sleeping. This isn’t for the pain, but to help to minimize swelling and bruising.
