Blepharoplasty in Salt Lake City, UT

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?

Nearly all of our facial features age along with us, and the eyes are no different. If your eyelids have begun to droop or sag, blepharoplasty can help rejuvenate their appearance. At Envision Cosmetic Surgery, we offer eyelid surgery to the residents of Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas of Utah.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to eliminate droopy eyelid skin, bulges, and bags around the eyes. Both the upper and lower eyelids can be treated, either individually or together.

What are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

  • Enhanced vision
  • Younger appearance
  • Reduction of under-eye bags
  • Reduced puffiness
  • Rejuvenated appearance

What Are The Types Of Eyelid Surgery?

1

Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery involves removing excess skin, fat, and sometimes muscle from the upper eyelids. This procedure is typically performed to address drooping or sagging upper eyelids, which can give a tired or aged appearance. It can also correct hooding which is excess skin that obstructs the upper eyelid vision when looking to the side.

2

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery primarily focuses on addressing under-eye bags, puffiness, and excess skin in the lower eyelid area. It involves removing or repositioning fat deposits, tightening loose skin, and improving the overall contour of the lower eyelids. This procedure aims to reduce the appearance of tired or aged eyes and smooth the lower eyelid area.

Who is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?

The best way to determine your candidacy for eyelid surgery is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Dunkley. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Dunkley will evaluate your cosmetic goals and help you determine whether blepharoplasty is a good fit for you. In addition to being in good health and having realistic expectations for the treatment, you might be a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Drooping eyelids due to excess skin
  • Puffiness or bags under the eyes
  • Impaired side vision
  • Tired or aged appearance

Does Eyelid Surgery Remove Crow’s Feet, Elevate Drooping Brows, And Remove My Dark Under-Eye Circles?

Dr. Dunkley addresses the eyelids themselves with this procedure. He removes excess skin and fat and may even tighten muscles that support the lower eyelid. Dr. Dunkley may remove the fat pads under the lower eyelids to reduce puffiness, but this won’t necessarily completely remove dark circles, although it should lessen their appearance. If your dark under-eye circles are being caused by shadows cast by puffy eyelids, this surgery will dramatically improve them. Crow’s feet involve the muscles at the outside of the eyes, so their appearance is only partially improved, by eyelid surgery. Drooping brows will also improve somewhat, but for significant improvement, a brow lift would be necessary. Dr. Dunkley often combines a brow lift with eyelid surgery to rejuvenate the entire upper third of the face. A brow lift also helps with crow’s feet.

Questions For Your Consult

How Can I Prepare For Blepharoplasty?

After completing your eyelid surgery consultation, it is most productive to prepare for blepharoplasty by planning for your recovery process. It's essential to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the surgery center on the day of the procedure and to have someone available to assist you at home during the initial recovery period. You will be asked to quit smoking three weeks before surgery, as it can impede blood circulation and hamper the healing process. Dr Dunkley may need an EKG and a note from your regular doctor stating you are healthy enough for surgery.

How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?

At Envision Cosmetic Surgery, each eyelid surgery procedure is personalized to a patient’s unique treatment goals. The cost of your blepharoplasty will vary depending on how we customize your treatment, which includes the techniques required to produce your desired results. Dr. Dunkley feels strongly that cosmetic surgery should be available to all and works hard to keep the cost as reasonable as possible. During your consultation, we can explain all of the costs associated with your eyelid surgery so you know exactly what to expect before starting treatment. To help make this and other treatments more affordable, we have many financing options available.

What Can I Expect On The Day Of My Blepharoplasty?

On the day of your eyelid surgery, your appointment will start with meeting the surgical team. Dr. Dunkley will speak to you, review the treatment plan for your blepharoplasty and mark the eyelids. Once in the operating suite, you are given anesthesia and will go to sleep. This ensures you will be safe and comfortable for the duration of the surgery, with no pain or memory of the surgical process. You will awake in the recovery room and stay until the anesthesia has worn off.

What Happens During an Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery will vary depending on whether you’re receiving upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

During upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This allows Dr. Dunkley to conceal the scar within the natural fold of the eyelid. The length and shape of the incision may vary depending on the extent of correction needed. Then, excess skin, muscle, and/or fat will be removed. The underlying muscles may also be tightened.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

During lower eyelid surgery, there are two options for incisions. The first approach is known as the conjunctiva incision, which is made inside the lower eyelid. This leaves no visible scarring, and is suitable when patients only need to address fat or puffiness in the eyelids. The second option is the subciliary incision, which is made on the outside, just below the lower lash line. It allows for more comprehensive surgical improvements though the scar is slightly more visible. This approach is best suited when patients can benefit from removing or repositioning fat, skin and muscles.

Can I Go Home After Eyelid Surgery?

Yes, blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure. Most patients are able to return home within a few hours of their surgery. However, you should arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you during the first few days of your recovery. This ensures that you have assistance and support as you begin your healing process.

How Long is Eyelid Surgery Recovery?

From the day of your surgery until the day you are fully recovered, can take 1-2 months. However, it’s important to note that the recovery process can vary from patient to patient depending on their health, adherence to post-operative guidelines and the extent of surgery performed. Furthermore, most people return to their normal routines well before they make a full recovery. Incisions continue to fade over time becoming virtually invisible by 6 months.

What is the Blepharoplasty Recovery Timeline?

Recovery from blepharoplasty is fairly simple with few side effects. The week by week recovery process will generally resemble the following timeline:

Breast Augmentation in Bucks County, PA & Hunterdon County, NJ

Week 1

Bruising, swelling, and watering of the eyes may occur immediately after your surgery. A cold compress the day of surgery will help minimize bruising and swelling. Dr. Dunkley advises his patients to keep the surgical area clean and apply antibiotic ointments and eye drops. For the first week you need to avoid elevating your blood pressure. This means you shouldn’t bend over deeply and should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting. Though bruising can take one to two weeks to disappear, you can return to work in 3-5 days.

Weeks 2-3

Most patients return to work and most their usual activities during this time. , and Swelling should continue to fade. Light activities are still recommended. Continue avoiding exercise and strenuous activities.

Week 4 and Beyond

Swelling and bruising should resolve by this time.. The desired improvements should be noticeable at this time. Scar treatments or creams can be used now. Patients should be able to return to all normal activities. It may take up to 3 months for any residual swelling to resolve, which signifies the end of the recovery process.

Post Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Will I Have Visible Scarring From Eyelid Surgery?

Dr. Dunkley has performed hundreds of blepharoplasties and is very attentive to visible scarring. All cuts leave a scar, Dr. Dunkley hides the incisions so no one knows you’ve had eyelid surgery. In the upper eyelid, the incision is made in the natural crease of the eye, so it is virtually invisible. In the lower eyelid, he may make the incision just below the eyelash, which heals very well, or else on the inside of the eyelid, so there won’t be any visible scar.

Are My Eyelid Surgery Results Permanent?

The changes made by Dr. Dunkley are permanent. The excess skin removed, tightened muscles, and repositioned fat are permanent changes. Most patients feel that this surgery takes many years off the age of their face, making them appear more alert and refreshed. Of course, the march of time stops for no one. Your eyes will continue to age. But they will never again have the same degree of sagging as they did prior to this surgery. You will enjoy your younger-looking eyes for years to come.
