Fight the Signs of Aging with Dermal Fillers
Facial Fillers and Lip Enhancement
While cosmetic surgery procedures such as a facelift or brow lift provide permanent results, some people don’t want to deal with the downtime and invasiveness. They opt instead to combat the signs of aging and enhance their lips with injectables. Injectables take different approaches — some prevent contractions in the muscles that cause wrinkles, others simply fill wrinkles from beneath or trigger the production of new collagen.
What’s the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?
This comes down to the two types of wrinkles, dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by muscle contractions from oft-repeated behaviors such as frowning or squinting. Crow’s feet and the 11s are dynamic wrinkles. Botox is a neuromodulator that is injected into the muscles responsible for those wrinkles. Botox stops the muscle from contracting for up to four months, and without the contraction below there is no wrinkle above.
Dermal fillers are used to treat the other type of wrinkle — static wrinkles. These wrinkles show themselves at all times. Frown lines, marionette lines, lip lines. These are all static wrinkles. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane are injected beneath the wrinkle and basically “fill” it, pushing the skin upward. The above-mentioned fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance that binds with water molecules to plump the skin.
How does Radiesse work?
Radiesse is different from hyaluronic acid fillers. Instead it is made of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. Radiesse works by not only filling the wrinkle, but by also stimulating the body to produce new collagen. Collagen is a protein that is the skin’s natural support system, so it smoothes lines and wrinkles in the injection area. Radiesse is long lasting, filling wrinkles for 18 months to two years.
Where is Radiesse best used?
Radiesse is most effective for filling and correcting smile lines, nasolabial folds (lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin), and other lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It is also good for depressed scars.
Can I make fillers last longer?
The body eventually absorbs all fillers and there’s nothing a patient can do to stop this. Different fillers are absorbed at different rates. Also, the injection site affects the duration. In general, neuromodulators (Botox and Dysport) last around four months, hyaluronic acid fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane) last from six months to a year, and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers (Radiesse) last up to two years.
Movement tends to shorten a filler’s lifespan. So movement in areas such as nasolabial folds and the lips cause the filler to dissipate more rapidly. Injections in the tear trough area tend to last the longest.
Which dermal filler works best for me?
There isn’t a single filler that is the solution. Everyone has different types of wrinkles. For your wrinkles caused by muscle contractions, Botox is the answer. For your static wrinkles, you can opt for hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite fillers. Each filler is generally intended for a specific type of wrinkle. Some have a thicker consistency so they need to be injected in areas with more fat to hide the filler. Others are thinner, so they spread and can handle an area with numerous smaller wrinkles. Dr. Dunkley and the Envision team know the ins and outs of every filler we offer, and will discuss which filler fits your unique needs.
How are fillers used in lip enhancement?
At Envision, we use hyaluronic acid fillers, predominantly Restylane and Juvederm, for lip enhancement. Formerly, fat injections and lip implants were used for lip enhancement, but fillers have mostly replaced these methods for enhancement. Hyaluronic acid fillers add shape, structure, and volume to the lips. We can control the lip volume easily and can create a gradual pace of treatment over different appointments until we, together, arrive at the volume and shape you desire. Another nice thing about hyaluronic acid fillers for lip enhancement is that if you don’t like the results, Envision Cosmetic Surgery specialists can inject an enzyme that instantly dissolves the filler.
What can I do about the wrinkles around my mouth?
Wrinkles around the mouth are a challenging problem. Options include injectable fillers such as Juvederm and Radiesse, chemical peels such as TCA (trichloro acetic acid), or surgical dermabrasion which may help with fine and moderate wrinkles but has the longest recovery time.
