Breast Augmentation in Salt Lake City, UT

If you are thinking about getting a breast augmentation, you are probably aware that you have a couple of choices when it comes to breast implants. But how do you know which one will be the best one for your desired look? Here we break down the differences between saline and silicone gel implants.

Saline

Saline implants consist of empty shells that are placed in the pocket under the breast tissue and muscle. They are then filled with sterile salt water. Patients who choose saline implants like the fact that they require smaller incisions than already filled silicone gel implants. Another benefit is the fact that should the implant leak, the saline is absorbed by your body and expelled naturally.

Silicone Gel

Silicone gel implants are a popular choice because they feel like natural breast tissue. They consist of a silicone outer shell that is filled with gelatin-like silicone gel. Silicone gel implants are already filled before insertion, so the incision will need to be larger than for saline implants. Technological advances have made this medical-grade silicone gel more cohesive, so if you have a leak, the gel should stay within the shell. You won’t know if the implant ruptures, which is why you will have to have regular check-ups with your surgeon to make sure they are intact.

No matter which implant type you choose, the incisions for implant insertion will be made either in the crease on the underside of the breast or at and around the areola. Your surgeon will make a recommendation based on your needs.

If saline or silicone breast implants aren’t what you desire, breast augmentation through fat transfer is another option. This process consists of harvesting unwanted fat from the body through liposuction and filtering it, then injecting into the breasts to increase fullness.

Breast augmentation is a life-changing procedure, which requires regular visits with your doctor to stay on top of any leaks or other concerns. To learn more about, call (801) 203-4341 to request a consultation with Dr. Dunkley.
