What Determines Breast Lift Incision Placement?
The incision pattern is selected based on several factors, including:
- The degree of breast sagging
- Breast size and shape
- Skin elasticity
- Nipple position
- Areola size
- Whether implants are being added
- The amount of reshaping required
More extensive sagging generally requires a longer incision because additional skin must be removed to create a lifted contour.
The Crescent Incision
A crescent incision is placed along the upper edge of the areola. It may be used for very mild sagging or small adjustments to nipple position.
Because this technique provides limited lifting, it is not commonly recommended for patients with moderate or significant breast drooping.
The Periareolar Incision
The periareolar, or donut, incision circles the entire areola. It can address mild sagging and may also reduce the size of enlarged areolas.
The scar typically follows the natural border between the areola and surrounding skin, helping it become less noticeable over time.
The Vertical Incision
The vertical, or lollipop, incision circles the areola and extends downward to the breast crease. This technique allows for more significant skin removal and breast reshaping than a periareolar lift.
It is commonly used for patients with moderate sagging who need noticeable elevation without an incision along the full length of the breast crease.
The Anchor Incision
The anchor incision circles the areola, travels vertically down the breast, and extends along the breast crease. It provides the greatest degree of lifting and reshaping.
This pattern may be recommended for significant sagging, substantial excess skin, or larger, heavier breasts.
