Are tired eyes aging you, even if you’re well-rested? Eyelid surgery can create a refreshed look by removing or repositioning excess skin, fat, and tissue around the eyes. While the procedure is relatively straightforward, recovery happens gradually, and knowing what to expect can help you prepare for a smoother healing process.
At Envision Cosmetic Surgery, dual board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Dunkley draws on nearly two decades of cosmetic surgery experience and an in-depth understanding of facial anatomy to provide personalized eyelid surgery care. Serving patients throughout Salt Lake City and surrounding Utah communities, the practice emphasizes thorough education, attentive follow-up, and a safe, comfortable recovery experience.
The First Few Days After Eyelid Surgery
Swelling, bruising, tightness, and mild discomfort are common during the first several days. Your eyes may feel dry, watery, sensitive to light, or temporarily blurry. These symptoms are usually most noticeable during the first 48-72 hours.
Keeping your head elevated, using cold compresses as directed, and taking prescribed or approved medication can help manage discomfort and swelling. You should also avoid rubbing your eyes or placing pressure on the surgical area.
Returning to Work and Daily Activities
Many patients feel comfortable returning to work and light daily activities within 7-10 days. However, visible bruising or swelling may still be present, especially if both the upper and lower eyelids were treated.
If your job involves strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or frequent bending, you may need additional recovery time. Makeup can sometimes be used to conceal remaining bruising once the incisions have healed enough and your surgeon has approved it.
Exercise and Physical Activity
Light walking is typically encouraged soon after surgery to support healthy circulation. More strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that raise blood pressure should generally be avoided for about two to three weeks.
Always follow your surgeon’s specific instructions, as returning to physical activity too soon may increase swelling or interfere with healing.
When Will the Final Results Be Visible?
Most swelling and bruising improve significantly within two weeks, but mild swelling may continue for longer. Incision lines initially appear pink or noticeable before gradually fading and flattening.
Eyelid surgery results usually become more refined over two to three months as the tissues settle. Scars may continue improving for six months or longer.
