Where Does the Fat Come From in a BBL?

Love the idea of taking fat from a “problem area” and putting it where you’d much rather have it? Like in the buttocks? That descirbes a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) perfectly. The shape and volume of the butt will be enhanced using your own fat. So, where does the fat actually come from?

Dr. Dunkley and his team at Envision Cosmetic Surgery, will help you understand how the surgeries are done and develop a personalized plan. With a priority on world-class care for Salt Lake City and surrounding Utah communities, Envision Cosmetic Surgery is committed to delivering an exceptional experience, through an educational consultation, comfortable surgical experience and life changing results that will enhance your confidence and quality of life.

How Fat Is Harvested for a BBL

The fat used in a BBL is collected through liposuction. Fat is carefully removed from unwanted areas and collected in a fully sealed collection canister to maintian its sterility. The fat is then processed so only healthy, viable fat cells are used for transfer. Because the procedure uses your own tissue, results look and feel natural.

Common BBL Donor Areas

Your best donor areas depend on individula anatomy, goals, and the amount of fat needed to achieve your desired outcome. Some of the most common fat-donor areas include:

Abdomen (stomach): One of the most popular donor sites. Removing fat here can help create a flatter midsection and improve the waist-to-hip ratio.

Flanks: This medical term refers to the back including the “love handles” and back bra roll area. Flank liposuction sculpts the waist and upper back to refine the silhouette. Our goal is a small waist and smooth contours creating a beautiful hourglass shape.

Thighs (inner or outer): Thigh liposuction can slim the legs, remove saddlebags and create space between the inner thighs.

Arms (less common): In select cases, small amounts of fat may be taken from the upper arms as a supplementary donor area, but it usually needs to be combined with other areas to have enough fat to transfer.

What If You Don’t Have Enough Fat?

If you’re naturally lean, you may still be a candidate, though results may be more subtle. However, even in smaller volume transfers, the overall shape enhancements can be quite noticeable. A small reduction of the waistline and minor enhancment in bottom projection and hip width make pleasant changes. Discussing options based on your body type helpful and often more encourageing than expected.

Does all fat survive?

Fat is a living substance. When moved, it has to again establish a blood supply. Before that happens, some of the transferred fat will not survive and be absorbed by the body. With newer innovations and gentle techniques, 70-80% of the transfered fat typically lives.
