A Brazilian btt lift (BBL) and a butt lift reshape the buttocks, but in very different ways. A BBL uses fat removed from another part of your body and transferred to the buttocks for added shape and volume. A butt lift removes excess skin and fat, then tightens the remaining skin.
Based in Murray, UT, Envision Cosmetic Surgery offers both procedures. Dr. Benjamin Dunkley is a dual board-certified cosmetic surgeon with nearly 20 years of experience in the Salt Lake City area. His cosmetic surgery fellowship included advanced surgical training for the body, breast, and face.
How Does a BBL Change the Buttocks?
A BBL is primarily an augmentation surgery. The goal is to increase fullness and reshape the buttocks with your own fat.
Liposuction removes fat from areas with enough available tissue, such as the abdomen, flanks, lower back, thighs, or hips. That fat is then prepared and transferred to the buttocks. Because liposuction is part of the procedure, a BBL can change both the donor area and the shape of your buttocks.
Your body type matters, as you need enough donor fat for transfer. You should also be aware that the body will absorb some of the transferred fat during healing. Fat that survives can remain for years, though later weight changes may affect your volume.
How Does a Butt Lift Work?
A butt lift primarily addresses loose or sagging tissue (often resulting from aging, gravity, or major weight changes) rather than a lack of volume. During the procedure, a surgeon removes loose skin and fat and tightens what remains. This raises the buttocks and creates a firmer contour.
That distinction is important. Adding fat won’t necessarily correct a significant amount of lax skin, while removing loose skin doesn’t serve the same purpose as increasing fullness.
Which Surgery Better Matches Your Goals?
Think about what bothers you most when comparing the two surgeries.
A BBL is more closely associated with:
- Adding buttock volume
- Improving shape and projection
- Using your own fat
- Contouring another area through liposuction
A butt lift is more closely associated with:
- Removing loose or sagging skin
- Raising descended tissue
- Reshaping the buttocks after weight changes
- Creating a firmer lower-body contour
Your anatomy also plays a major role. Someone with good skin quality and enough donor fat has different needs from someone whose primary concern is skin laxity after significant weight loss.
