Understanding Credentialing

Two schools of medicine exist in the United States. Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM), the first osteopathic medical school, was founded in 1872, many years after allopathic medical schools had been established (what most people know as an MD or Medicinae Doctor). Subtle differences in philosophy and treatment modalities differentiate the two types of medicine. Both schools of medicines, Osteopathic and Allopathic, allow physicians to practice every aspect and specialty of medicine.

Dr Dunkley received his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, which is located in Kirksville, Missouri (www.kcom.edu). As an Osteopathic physician, all specialties are overseen by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Sub-specialties within specialties also exist. For instance, one must complete training in Internal Medicine before sub-specializing in Cardiology. One can sub-specialize in Cosmetic Surgery after completing training in Otolaryngology / Facial Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, or Dermatology.
