Though not commonly discussed, aging, childbirth, and other factors, can make changes down below. The female genitalia can lose their youthful appearance or perhaps developed in an undesired way from the beginning. While this has been regarded as a taboo topic, more and more women in Salt Lake City have become aware of a solution — labiaplasty.
What is a labiaplasty?
A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure performed to rejuvenate the appearance of the vagina according to the preference of the patient. This surgery involves the reduction of the inner lips of the vagina and sometimes alterations to the outer lips and clitoral hood as well. Though inner or outer lips of any size are natural and normal, preference causes some women to opt for labiaplasty.
What is the difference between a labiaplasty and vaginoplasty?
Labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are not ths same. Labiaplasty refers to the alteration of the outside appearance of the vagina. Vaginoplasty refers to tightening of the vagina. This is done by removing excess vaginal lining and tightening the surrounding soft tissues and muscles.
When should I get a labiaplasty?
A woman’s vagina has inner and outer lips, also known as the labia. Most women want the inner lips shorter than the outer lips. Inner lips that extend beyond the outer lips can be irritated by tight fitting clothing, or when exercising. Excessively long inner lips can interfere and therefore decrease pleasure during sex as well. A labiaplasty more favorably shapes the outer genitalia for many activities. If you suffer from any problems mentioned, surgery may make a difference.
How is a labiaplasty done in our Salt Lake City practice?
Traditional labiaplasty is done by removing portions of the inner labia and clitoral hood skin. The edges are stitched using fine, dissolvable stitches. The outer lips can be reduced; or if deflated, fat can be grafted to the lips to restore volume. You will be kept comfortable throughout the procedure using local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia when doing other surgeries at the same time. The entire procedure usually takes one to two hours.
Are there any risks involved in a labiaplasty?
As with any other surgery, there are certain short-term risks involved in a labiaplasty. These include infection, bleeding, bruising and swelling. Because the area is moist, occasionally the incisions can separate. There may be pain during sexual intercourse initally, that resolves over the first two months.
What results can I expect from a labiaplasty?
After a labiaplasty, the vagina looks different. Expect those nice changes to last as well. The vagina can still change with time or more children. However, Dr. Dunkley hears more than anything else patients are elated with their results, as much or more than any cosmetic procedure.
