Come get smoother, healthy looking skin in Salt Lake City, Utah
People continue to look for better ways to have smoother, healthier-looking skin without long recovery times. Our Utah patients can now get that with an innovative treatment known as Dermapen.
What is Dermapen?
Dermapen is similar to getting a tattoo without ink. It makes use of multiple needles on an oscillating head to puncture the patient’s skin, creating a perceived injury that your body then responds to by stimulating the production of skin-firming collagen and thickening the dermis.
Dermapen is named for the device used and is actually a brand name. The procedure is technically called “percutaneous collagen induction therapy” though more commonly referred to as micro needling. Micropen and Cosmopen are two other brand name devices commonly used.
The effectiveness of Dermapen is similar to several other treatments, including chemical peels, intense pulsed light (IPL), and Fraxel laser. However, Dermapen treatments are less expensive and recovery is easier.
What are the benefits of Dermapen?
As we age, the skin thins, relaxes and gets more lines and age spots. Dermapen tightens the skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines, improves scars, and makes stretch marks less visible. Color variations decrease dramatically as well. In addition, the recovery is quite simple.
How does Dermapen work?
The skin has the ability to repair itself after it is physically damaged. Dermapen was discovered by accident. People with scars often got tattoos to cover them. Repeatedly people reported the scar was smoother and flatter after getting a tattoo. A little research revealed needling creates micro injuries in the skin triggering the body’s repair mechanisms and yes, scars will improve. Even unscarred skin benefits from micro needling. Try it, the results are nice.
What can I expect during a Dermapen treatment?
Prior to treatment, a topical numbing medication is applied to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure. After allowing the topical medicine to take effect, the Dermapen is moved over the patient’s skin to create micro injuries. The body perceives this injury to the skin, and reacts by increasing the production of elastin and collagen. Including the time for the topical numbing medicine to work, most treatments take about an hour.
What can I expect after a Dermapen treatment?
Your skin will look mildly sunburned immediately after the treatment. The redness fades over the next one to three days. Most of our patients resume their normal activities immediately after their Dermapen treatment. Initally most patients notice the skin colour evens out, but the full results may take one to two months after the procedure to show, as the new collagen continues to mature in the skin. Initially, a vitamin-based oil is applied to the skin, but by day two or three, makeup is fine.
